Woodstock Hot Stone Massage Therapy
Hot Stone massage therapy treats physical ailments through the application of heat as a complement to massage techniques.
How does Hot Stone Massage Work?
Black basalt stones, made by volcanic action, are used in this modality. They are derived from magma which originates at earth depths where the temperature is high enough and the pressure low enough that the rock can melt. The magnesium and iron rich magmas produce basalt at the sea floor of many volcanoes. Wave action and currents of the sea craft basalt stones. They can vary in color from dark grey with a bit of green to almost black. The basalt stones have excellent heat and cold retention properties and therefore are used in stone massage. Before the treatment, the stones are warmed up in hot salt water, placed on the body and used to perform massage techniques. The combination of the energy from warm stones and massage work gives amazing results. Hot stone massage induces deep relaxation, helps with detoxification, melts tension and alleviates pain. Warm stones applied to the body increase the heart and the respiration rate, as well as flexibility due to a melting effect on the connective tissue. Vasodilation of capillaries caused by heat application brings blood rich in nutrients and oxygen to the area and helps with the healing process.
Hot stone massage can relieve many symptoms related to:
- Poor blood circulation
- Back pain
- Chronic pain
- Stress and anxiety
- Muscle aches and tension
The History of Hot Stone Massage
Different forms of Hot Stone massage date back to Ancient Egypt with variations also practiced during certain North American Native ceremonies as an energy cleansing and healing tool. Hot stone massage techniques eventually merged with established massage therapies as a more comfortable form of achieving deep muscle release.
